• Los Angeles Regional Recap

Congratulations to ALL Teams, Mentors, Volunteers, Sponsors, Friends and Family members who participated in the Los Angeles Regional Sponsored by the Roddenberry Foundation and helped to create an exciting and memorable weekend.

The following teams and individuals earned top honors at the Regional and will be going on to compete at the Championships in St. Louis in April.  We wish them the best of luck!

    Regional Chairman’s Award
Team 1515, MorTorq – Beverly Hills, CA

8595721539_89b1382720The Los Angeles Chairman’s Award represents the true spirit of FIRST.  It honors the team that best serves as a model for other teams to emulate and that embodies the goals of FIRST.  It remains FIRST’s most prestigious team award.  The Chairman’s Award is presented to the team judged to have the most significant measurable impact of its partnerships among its participants, school, and community over a sustained period, not just a single build season or school year. The winner is able to demonstrate progress towards FIRST’s mission of transforming our culture.  The recipient will be invited to the FIRST Championship where it will compete for the Chairman’s Award against the winners from all the other qualifying events.

Here’s what the Judges had to say –

“This year the judges chose a team that draws from a broad base of the student body: engineers, athletes, actors, and student government representatives.  The team has evolved to include over 90 students with a 50/50 gender balance.  The team’s dynamic sub-team structure has allowed each member to explore and contribute with their own unique skills and passions, spreading the impact of FIRST beyond the typical science and math centered students.

This team has had a consistent impact from the student body to the local, national, and international communities.  They communicate the message of FIRST through a balanced outreach program that includes mentoring over 50 teams across the world, contributing to local and national charities with volunteer work and fund raisers.

They have continued to facilitate FIRST Robotics’ goals through Community, Leadership, Innovation, Motivation, and Balance which provide students with the tools to “CLIMB to Your Prime”.  Please join us in congratulating the 2013 Los Angeles Regional Chairman’s Award winner – 1515 MorTorq”

    Rookie All-Star Award

Screen Shot 2013-04-15 at 6.24.28 PMThis award celebrates a 1st year team demonstrating an early but strong partnership effort, implementing the mission of FIRST.  Its winner understands what FIRST is really trying to accomplish and realizes that technical work is fun and challenging, made better by building a partnership among team, community and school.  This is not an easy challenge for a rookie team but the judges want to recognize and reward one team that got it right.

Here’s what the judges had to say –

“This team took on the FIRST challenge with great ingenuity and creativity from their unique logo to their technical approach.  They are a high-energy team that understood that keeping it simple is a power design principle and has had positive impacts throughout the pits.  All of this together has “netted” the Rookie All Star Award for team 4501 – Humans.”

    Woodie Flowers Finalist Award
    Dr. David Brinza
    Mentor for Team 980

562266_527478610637566_309505449_nA few years after helping Dean Kamen create FIRST, Dr. William Murphy founded the Woodie Flowers Award with the intent to celebrate effective communication in the art and science of engineering and design. At the FIRST Championship in St. Louis, the essays of this year’s finalists will be combined with previous finalists. One mentor will receive the Championship Woodie Flowers Award.

Here’s what the judges had to say –

“Of the many excellent nominations at the Los Angeles Regional, one candidate is truly out of this world.  This mentor stresses the importance of never giving up and demonstrates a fierce work ethic.  He tutors students in math, chemistry and physics.  He makes sure that the students learn the importance of working as a team and that no one person is greater than the combined efforts of many.  Above all he is enthusiastic in everything he does.

Excited about giving back, this mentor also teaches his students to give back.  Many students return to mentor.  In addition to inspiring many students on the team, this year’s winner is an active event volunteer and has served in many leadership roles even though he lives on Mars time.

Please join me in congratulating the winner of the Los Angeles Regional Woodie Flowers finalist award – David Brinza of Team 980!”
